Spelling to Communicate S2C
What is Spelling to Communicate?
Spelling to Communicate (S2C) is a motor-based approach that supports individuals with motor challenges to develop the purposeful movements needed to point to letters and spell as an alternative means of communication (AAC).S2C is based on the understanding that communication differences arise from difficulties with motor planning and control, rather than from a lack of understanding. Through consistent, structured practice, individuals work to strengthen motor control so that they can reliably select letters to express their thoughts. As motor skills develop, individuals typically progress from pointing to letters on boards to typing on a keyboard. Over time, communication moves from more concrete responses to increasingly complex expression as motor control, endurance, and fluency improve.

One-on-One S2C Sessions
Individual sessions (typically 1–2 per week) are delivered by a registered S2C practitioner and provide structured, focused support to develop the motor skills required for reliable spelling.
Sessions are tailored to the individual and focus on:
-
Developing purposeful motor control
-
Supporting regulation
-
Building communication endurance
-
Aligning cognition with motor output
Teaching is delivered through engaging, age-appropriate lessons.
Communication & Regulation Partner (CRP) Training
Our CRP and parent training programme is designed to support families and carers in becoming fluent Communication and Regulation Partners for their speller. Training is delivered alongside your one-to-one coaching sessions, allowing you to practice skills in real time under the guidance of a registered S2C practitioner.
The programme includes:
Foundations of S2C – covering the core principles and concepts that underpin the practice
Techniques in S2C – practical strategies for supporting communication, motor skill development, and regulation
Guided Practice – hands-on coaching where you work directly with your loved one under professional mentorship
Through this training, families and carers gain the confidence and skills needed to support consistent, meaningful communication across various settings.
Group Sessions
Our group sessions are held once a week and provide spellers with the opportunity to learn, practise, and develop their communication skills in a supportive peer environment.
Depending on individual S2C levels, groups may also collaborate to plan outings and events, fostering independence, teamwork, and social participation.
Through these sessions, spellers strengthen both their communication and social skills, while learning to apply their S2C skills beyond individual lessons.
